Church of Our Lady of Grace

The original chapel was instituted in 1503 by João de França, son of André Gonçalves de França and built in the middle of the first half of the sixteenth century. The church was built during the second half of the eighteenth century and bears the inscription “1791” on the main façade, having been solemnly blessed in 1793. It was rebuilt in the first half of the twentieth century with three naves. Inside the image of Our Lady of Grace stands out, dating from the mid-eighteenth century.

Chapel of the Magi

Founded in 1520 by Francisco Homem de Gouveia and his wife D. Isabel Afonso, this Manueline chapel with a simple rectangular plan has a main façade with gable on which is mounted a cross of Christ. Subsequently, in the mid-twentieth century, it became the property of Júlio César de Faria, and today it is the public domain of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The interior is noteworthy for its Manueline period characteristics, such as the alfarge ceiling, and the important altarpiece of the Flemish school composed of painting and sculpture, which is dedicated to the Annunciation on the reverse. On the other side it represents the donors with St. Anthony and St. Francis. The central panel, in polychrome oak wood, depicts the Adoration of the Magi. Due to its quality, it is unique in Madeira and rare at the national level.

Butter Factory

Originally built in 1910, the factory remained in operation until 1969. In 2010, at the initiative of a German investor, the building was recovered and adapted for tourist accommodation together with a bakery, the result of an architectural project by MSB Arquitetura e Planeamento, which retained the structure of the original exterior, while creating a modern-style interior.
