Madeira Island is considered by many one of the best places to surf in Europe. International encounters often take place here, Jardim do Mar being one of the hotspots for this activity where various events like the Red Bull Big Wave Challenge 2000 and the World Surfing Championships 2001 took place.

Known as surfers paradise, where it is possible to surf almost year round, in Jardim do Mar and its neighbouring Paul do Mar, it is possible to watch the acrobatics of the many surfers who glide through looking for the possibility of defying towering waves, considered some of the best in Europe.
