How to get here

With Funchal as reference:

  • Take the Via Rápida (VR1) towards Ribeira Brava;
  • In Ribeira Brava, follow the Via Expresso (VE3) towards Ponta do Sol and Calheta;
  • Once you arrive in Calheta, at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Estrada Dr. Roberto Monteiro:
  • At the crossing with the Estrada Regional (E.R. 105), follow the left until Pico Gordo;
  • The trail is located on the left.

Route Summary

This route starts next to the sign saying Pico Gordo. This trail is pure enduro.

Beware, right after the first 200m, between the heather, there is a very technical descent which is dangerous on rainy days. From then on the trail demands some technical ability due to the various rocky areas.

At the end of the single track follow the dirt road on the left that goes up to the road. It’s about 3 minutes of pedalling to the picknick area of Caldeira where you may go ahead to the Rabaçal tunnel to reach the “Pipeline” trail.

  • Mobile Phone;
  • Thermal blanket;
  • Waterproof jacket;
  • Puncture repair kit;
  • Inner tube.
